How long does a bag of feed stay fresh once opened?
For maximum nutritional value, grain and pellet feeds should be consumed within 45 to 60 days of opening, provided they are stored in a cool, dry, and rodent-proof container. Textured feeds (with molasses) have a shorter shelf life in the summer, as the moisture can attract mold more quickly.

Once we have your form on file, your account will automatically apply the exemption to all qualifying purchases.
What is the difference between Starter, Grower, and Layer feed for chickens?
These feeds are formulated for specific life stages:
- Starter (0–8 weeks): High protein (typically 20–22%) to support rapid growth and bone development.
- Grower (8–18 weeks): Slightly lower protein (16–18%) to ensure steady growth without causing liver or kidney issues before egg-laying begins.
- Layer (18+ weeks): Lower protein (16%) but significantly higher calcium (around 3.5–4.5%) to support strong, healthy eggshell production. Never feed layer ration to chicks, as the excess calcium can be fatal to them.
Do you carry specialized feed for show animals (4-H / FFA)?
Yes. We stock premium show-grade feeds for cattle, swine, sheep, and goats designed to optimize muscle tone, coat quality, and conformation. If you need a specific top-dress supplement or conditioning oil that isn’t on our floor, let us know at least two weeks before your show cycle begins so we can source it for you.
Do you offer carry-out assistance?
Always! You never have to lift a heavy bag at our store. When you check out, just let our cashier know you’d like assistance. Pull your vehicle up to our designated loading zone, and our team will gladly load and stack your feed, straw, or hay into your truck or trunk for you.
Why does the price of feed and grain change throughout the year?
Grain products are commodities. Our pricing is directly tied to the national agricultural market, local crop yields, weather events, and fuel/transportation costs. While we do everything we can to absorb minor market fluctuations, our prices may adjust periodically to reflect current wholesale mill costs.
FAQ when considering a utility trailer purchase:
1. What size utility trailer do I need?
The right size depends on what you plan to haul. For light-duty use like lawn equipment, a 5×8 or 6×10 trailer works well. For ATVs, small vehicles, or construction materials, consider 6×12 or larger. Always factor in both weight capacity and deck space, not just dimensions. At Worcester’s our sales team will be happy to assist.
2. What is the weight capacity of a utility trailer?
Utility trailers typically range from 2,000 lbs to over 10,000 lbs GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Make sure the trailer’s capacity exceeds your load weight, including cargo and any attachments, to stay safe and legal.
3. Do I need brakes on my utility trailer?
In most states, trailers over 3,000 lbs GVWR require brakes. Even if not required, brakes are highly recommended for safety—especially when hauling heavy loads or driving in hilly areas.
4. What’s the difference between a single axle and a tandem axle trailer?
- Single axle trailers are lighter, easier to maneuver, and cost less.
- Tandem axle trailers offer better stability, higher weight capacity, and safer towing for heavier loads.
If you’re hauling regularly or heavy equipment, tandem is usually the better investment. At Worcester’s we work directly with our trailer manufacturers for standard models as well as customer orders
5. What type of flooring is best for a utility trailer?
Most trailers use pressure-treated wood decking, which is durable and affordable. Steel flooring is stronger but heavier and more prone to rust if not maintained. Wood is typically preferred for versatility and ease of replacement.
6. Do I need a license plate or registration for a utility trailer?
Yes, in most states utility trailers must be registered and display a license plate. Requirements vary, so check your state DMV regulations for specifics on title, registration, and inspection.
7. What vehicle do I need to tow a utility trailer?
It depends on the trailer’s weight. Small trailers can be towed by SUVs or half-ton trucks, while heavier trailers require a properly rated pickup truck with sufficient towing capacity. Always check your vehicle’s tow rating before buying.
8. How do I maintain a utility trailer?
Basic maintenance includes:
- Checking tire pressure and wear
- Greasing wheel bearings
- Inspecting brakes and lights
- Treating or sealing wood decking
Routine maintenance extends the life of your trailer and prevents costly repairs. At Worcester’s we offer most service and maintenance for utility trailers
9. Should I buy a new or used utility trailer?
- New trailers offer warranties, better reliability, and latest features
- Used trailers can save money but may come with hidden wear or structural issues
If buying used, inspect the frame, axles, and wiring carefully.
10. What features should I look for in a quality utility trailer?
Key features include:
- Heavy-duty steel frame
- Quality welds and powder coating
- LED lighting
- Reinforced ramp gate
- Tie-down points
- Reliable axle and suspension system
These features improve durability, safety, and long-term value.
FAQ for common trailer maintenance
1. How often should I service my utility trailer?
You should perform a basic inspection before every use and do a full service every 3–6 months, depending on usage. Heavy or commercial use may require monthly maintenance checks. At Worcester’s we provide full utility trailer service as well as maintenance designed to keep your trailer on the road.
2. How often should trailer wheel bearings be greased?
Wheel bearings should be greased every 6–12 months or every 3,000–5,000 miles. If you haul heavy loads or drive in wet conditions, grease them more frequently to prevent failure.
3. What are the most common utility trailer maintenance issues?
The most common issues include:
- Worn or underinflated tires

- Cracks in the sidewalls (dry rot)
- Uneven tread wear
- Tires older than 5–6 years, even if tread looks good
See our parts department at Worcester’s for most trailer tires. And also note trailer tires often age out before they wear out.
5. How do I maintain trailer lights and wiring?
Check all lights before each trip. Clean connections, look for exposed wires, and apply dielectric grease to prevent corrosion. LED lights are more durable and require less maintenance than traditional bulbs.
6. How can I prevent rust on my utility trailer?
To prevent rust:
- Wash your trailer regularly, especially after exposure to salt
- Touch up chipped paint
- Apply protective coatings or rust inhibitors
- Store indoors or use a cover when possible
Rust prevention is key to extending trailer lifespan.
7. Do trailer brakes require regular maintenance?

Grain Return & Exchange Policy
To ensure the quality and safety of our inventory, we adhere to a strict policy regarding grain returns. Please review the following terms prior to purchase.
Why This Policy Exists
As a small business, we do not have the capacity to absorb the financial losses that big-box retailers can. To maintain competitive pricing and ensure our viability, we must enforce a rigorous return standard that protects our inventory and our operations.
Customer Responsibility & Research
It is the customer’s sole responsibility to verify and select the correct grain based on the manufacturer product code. If a customer purchases the incorrect feed due to a lack of research or code verification:
- Restocking Fee: A 25% restocking fee will be applied to the return (consistent with Kalmbach corporate policy).
- Exchanges: If the incorrect feed is unopened and in resalable condition, it may be exchanged for a different feed currently in stock within 7 days with the original receipt.
Limited Refund Exception
If a customer purchases the incorrect feed and we do not have the desired/correct coded feed available in our current inventory:
- The customer has 7 days from the date of purchase to return the product for a full refund.
- The original receipt must be presented.
- Bag(s) must be unopened and in resalable condition.
Defective Product & Factory Diagnosis
If a customer suspects a manufacturing defect (e.g., bug infestation, abnormal contents, or incorrect formula) immediately upon opening:
- Do Not Dump: We recommend bringing back the entire bag. We cannot accept returns for grain that has already been dumped into a grain bin.
- Sampling: A sample of the grain will be required for Kalmbach (KMB) to perform a diagnosis to determine if the formula was off or if an error occurred during manufacturing.
- Resolution: If KMB confirms a manufacturing error, they are responsible for providing the customer with a replacement bag(s).
Liability & Storage
We are not responsible for replacement or refund if the product was compromised by the customer. This includes grain left in wet, damp, or humid locations. Once the product leaves our facility, maintaining a dry, safe storage environment is the customer’s responsibility.
